Lavender Cotton or Santolina chamaecyparissus is considered an attractive evergreen sub-shrub. Its growing range spans Hardiness Zones 6-8. Severe winter cold can damage mature plants. Finely divided green leaves show remarkable recovery from any foliar burn. Like Rosemary, spring pruning can rejuvenate appearance. Santolina can be effectively used as a companion perennial with Echinacea purpurea or Purple Coneflower. Both herbs bloom at the same time each year.
Santolina’s aromatic foliage is deer resistant. It is best grown in sunny locations away from trees. Occasional pruning effectively manages plant size. Drought tolerance means minimal irrigation is needed. This ornamental herb’s outstanding survival virtues make it a perfect choice for any summer flowering perennial garden.
